I have repeatedley run into fuel starvation problems due to a blocked primary fuel filter on my Legend 38 powered by a 40 horse 3 cylinder diesel. I currently run the engine abiout 100 hours a year but find that I need to replace the primary filter after 50 hours. I keep mt fuel tank topped up through the winter and also use a fuel stabiliser and anti-fungal additive. Is my experience usual, in which case how do large power boats keep running? or do I have another problem?

The primary fuel filter should not need replacing that quickly.

What does the used filter look like when removed?

The most likely cause is a Diesel bug problem. Do a search and there have been plenty of posts with good advice on how to treat the problem.

Also what is your filter? My engine (beta 20) was fitted with a tiny primary filter by the previous owner and so it blocked quickly. I had some dirty fuel with bug also. I changed to a clean plastic tank and changed my filter to a Racor. New filter is nice and chunky, stops water a nd anything else, is easy to change without losing a nut or a washer and is only changed yearly (still clean).
