don't really need a genny (not at £4k+, at any rate) but I did see any number of open frame type diesel gennies on ebay. Are these suitable for marine use, stuck away in the lazaret and plumbed into the main tank? Leccy start, remote control panel etc seems OK in principle.

depends on the cooling. A lot of them that I've seen are air cooled. Don't think that would be that good in an enclosed space. Not without a bit of alteration to the locker. Bloody noisey a lot of them.

Have gone thro' this and ended up with a very quite 2kw honda genny. Light enough to carry, sits on the bathing platform and runs sufficent power for SWMBO whilst at anchorage i.e. Microwave so she can make a nice lunch. Works well.

If cooling is needed, how about connecting a cheap fan to the 240v outlet and ducting it out/in to the locker. as soon as you start to generate power the fan runs and cools the unit! Maybe??? what do you think?
