Above 2800 rpm, my new diesel engine makes the boat squat and puts the exhaust below the waterline.

A friend's version of the same boat does the same thing.

Should I go through the hassle and expense of moving the exhaust - or should I ignore it?

prior to re-engineing i assume it didnt "squat".
my sail boats exhaust goes under water @ just below cruising revs & appear to have no probs in 25 yrs.
r u getting full revs with new engine ,u might concider having a prop / props with less pitch, if not

It's so long since the previous engine was healthy enough to get that angry, I almost forget.

Yes it did, flat chat - but it didn't bury it like the new Nanni can.

The new motor gets more than its max revs - so the old prop needs more pitch, which will exacerbate the "squat".

On my old Halcyon 27, the exhaust outlet was below water anyway.

No problems encountered there at all.

The exhaust has to push water anyway in the mixing box, so has a certain amount of back pressure anyway.

adjust the throttle stop so you cant over rev..if your happy with the speed of the boat that is..if you up the pitch you may find just knocking into fwd/rev on tickover for close quarter manouver it will be to coarse..after all it is a sail boat you dont want to waterski do you? ok I accept correct prop size is important but maybe the prop is correct for your hull design and you have got a more power from your new lump

ignore it, make sure the water cannot be sucked back into the engine, maybe fit a swan neck to the exhaust just before it exits the transom, if it has not already got one fitted....my boat also squats when at cruising speed, and no problems occured over last 5 years...
