Diesel engine - service

[Athene V30]

I am in the process of buying a 27' sloop currently ashore at Woodbridge in Suffolk with a Yanmar YSE8 single cylinder 8hp diesel inboard.

Can anyone recommend a mechanic in Suffolk / N Essex to give it the once over / winterise / service etc? My mechanical knowledge is zero, my previous boat had a petrol outboard and I don't want to be taken for a ride!

I understand the RYA run an 'understand your diesel' course - has anyone been on it? Is it worth it?

Re; The RYA diesel course; These are run by a number of people around the country. The one I went on at Brighton run by the Volvo agency was very good. I would think if you do not know much about diesel engines it would be most sensible to go on such a course.

Peter Norris has my highest recommendation - he's a one man band, drives a mobile workshop-van and has loads of expertise.

Went on an RYA Diesel Engine Maintenance course yesterday. Very good indeed-more theoretical than I had expected, but I now understand how they work. It was useful to practice some routine maintenance. Well worth doing.
