Diesel engine ignition

I can stop my Yanmar diesel from the helm, but the ignition switch is down below at the nav station. Inevitabl6 what happens is that the engine is stopped and the ignition is forgotten about and left on for half an hour.

I recall when I was a kid that my dad used to go nuts if the ignition was left on because it would "burn out the coil". I guess that's irrelevant for a diesel and leaving it on won't hurt?

On another point - I'd like to get a tachometer at the helm (yes I'm an ex mobo'er!) is that difficult and how could it be acheived?

thanks in advance.

You wont damage anything, i would have expected the alarms to drive you mad though.
The cheapest way for a tacho on a yanmar is to get a universal one from lsuk, this involves a wire being soldered to the stator winding inside the alternator

Thanks Steve,

Re the alternator - I have a tacho at the nav station - is it not possible to extract the output off the back of that to create a duplicate tacho at the helm station?

depends on the type of tacho, if its yanmar then no, if its a generic one then there should be no limit of tacho`s you can have.
the yanmar tachos use a coil pickup, the generic ones have the phased input from the alternator

I saw a design (for a tractor alternator conversion) that used an oil-pressure switch to switch the "ignition" on when the engine starts, and off when it stops. That looked a neat idea.

In your installation the "igition" may feed the alternator feed windings, in which case it would slowly drain the battery if left switched on. I don't know if that counts as doing harm or not,

Robih, I was concerned about the revs I was maintaining on my Trapper 300,s Yanmar YSE8, so I fitted a Tiny Tach diesel digital tacho. Costs £55 inc vat and postage. So simple to fit. Positioned mine next to log and depth units in cockpit. 12volt feed off log unit, 1 thin wire to transducer which clamps round injector pipe , Thats it!
The service from the UK distributor, excellent, fast and didnt want payment until I had it working.
Contact Richard Dunn at itco@btopenworld.com You can see the unit on the web, just type in Tiny Tach.

Just another thought - I split my engine display panel so that buttons and key were under cover inside cabin , but warning lights and tacho on other side of cabin bulkhead, in the cockpit.
Seems to do the trick. Mind you, I can reach the key and stop button from helming position in cockpit.

If it really worries you wire an electronic "buzzer" in parallel with the oil pressure warning light. That way within a fraction of a second of stopping the engine you will get an audible warning. The only down side is that it will sound when you first swtch on as well!
