Nothing on telly so I thought I would share my experience of 'the bug'.
Alexandros only gets through about 4 gallons of diesel a season, however, being an overcautious chap with too much imagination, I always keep another 2 gallon in a container in the locker, just in case.

Upon dipping the tank last weekend, I found that I could squeeze the reserve into the main tank so happily poured it in. As the last drop disappeared down the funnel, I noticed a lump of black jelly, about three inches long, vanish down the hole. (I have since bought a funnel with a filter in it by the way).

I suspected the jelly like lump to be diesel bug but really do not know for sure. I use 'FuelSet' in the tank but not in the reserve container.

This weekend I decided that I could not sleep with the nasty in my tank so pumped the lot out into spare cans. The diesel that came out was full of tiny black bits, which when rubbed between finger and thumb disappeared so not rust.
However the diesel was cloudy in appearance so i gave it to a mate with an old tractor and will refill this coming weekend with fresh. I am about to do the winter service anyway, so filters etc will all be changed.

In future I will add FuelSet to the reserve cans as well as the main tank as I suspect the bug grew in the can over the summer. Anyone else found this to be the case or was my black jelly something else?

I took my plastic tank out a couple of years ago to clean it as a precaution. I found a single lump of dark brown gelatinous material about the size of my hand sliding around on the bottom. It was quite firm and couldn't be broken up very easily. The rest of the fuel looked clear.

I've just had to remove the tank again to get to a skin fitting behind it. This time there was a similar lump at the bottom about the size of my thumbnail. I have been treating the fuel but being a skinflint the stuff I have been using is now very old. I think I'll invest in a new bottle.

Thanks

Thanks Dipper, so it would appear that undisturbed diesel bug forms lumps, rather like a 'vinegar mother'. I guess when it encountered the FuelSet it broke up and went into suspension, hence the cloudy fuel.

Clever nature in'it, finds a niche anywhere.
