From the Bergens Tidende the local newspaper (translated).
Eleven crew were rescued in the early hours of yesterday morning from the wooden 100 foot motorboat 'St Eveio I' which went aground in Sagafjord. The alarm was first raised at 04:20 when the St Eveio put out a distress call to Utsire coastguard. A maritime dive vessel from the Bergen fire brigade, which was on excercise nearby, was diverted to the scene and arrived within one hour. All crew, including British skipper Matthew Dibley (aged 39) were safely evacuated ashore with 3 of the crew requiring hospitalisation for trauma injuries and hypothermia.
Karl Isdalsen of the Bergen Fire Brigade explains that the boat was anchored in 20 metres water with only 30 metres of chain deployed. "When we examined the vessel, we found 70 metres of unused chain in the anchor locker. It should have been obvious to the captain that the anchor would drag in any wind".
Local fisherman Hap Yønn, who passed the vessel shortly after midnight, told the Tidende that there were no lookouts visible on the bridge and that a party appeared to be in full swing below. On returning later, he saw the vessel moving rapidly downwind towards the rocks and tried to alert the crew first by radio and then with a flare pistol, but there was no response. The vessel grounded shortly afterwards and has sustained considerable hull damage.
The British skipper refused to comment on the incident, and a file is being passed to Bergen Police who have placed him under formal investigation. Meanwhile, attempts to re-float the vessel will be made using a floating crane and buoyancy bags.
Was it really necessary to bring this up again? As many of us know, Matt has served his time and is a free man again. Last I heard he was trying to get his life back together with the support of family and friends.
I can still hear him saying that, when stories like this are reprinted, "it's like the bottom's dropped off my boat"
Dreadfull really when you consider the state he was in when he came out of the Oslo open prison.. crack addict .. no wonder he's not been able to look uniformed norwegian women in the eye since!!
Matt asked me to post this. I believe that he feels it's the final step in his long rehabilitation. I know how hard it was for him as we corresponded regularly. The prison in Oslo is known as the toughest in Scandinavia, and houses some very unsavoury sexual offenders.
Agree that he's paid his dues, but I don't think he'll ever walk normally again. So very sad.
I understand the modern leftie pinko trend in rehab is to face ones accusers etc.
I suppose a forum trip to the Fjord would be no bad thing? This would enable us to support our friend through what will obviously be a difficult time
