Devcon Z Cold galvanising?

I have used similar products to repair lost galvanising on steel derrick beams in both aerosol and brush on methods. I can't remember if it was Devcon. Typical applications where where fittings had worn away the original beam coating and rust had started. The beams are located on rigs in the North Sea. It appears to work well but you must follow the surface preparation instructions. It is important that all steel dust from say, sanding, is removed as it will significantly shorten the life of the coating if left in place and painted in.

It's a zinc rich paint and suffers all the problems of other types of paint. i.e. the effectiveness depends on the quality of the surface preparation. We used to use Galvafroid to repair damaged areas of galvanising but as it was applied on site often with little preparation, it was of limited use and frequently would detach after a short time. Zinc rich paints are also not very resistant to abrasion. In short, it's nowhere near as good as hot galvanising but better than nothing if applied properly.

I googled it before starting the thread and have found a UK supplier and e-mailed them.

A couple of the chainplate fastenings on my MAB are weeping rust. No big deal as rust always looks much worse than it actually is.

As they can't (easily) be accessed from inside the hull the acknowledged treatment is to dig down from the outside, clean up the offending fastening, epoxy and then fill the void with a graving piece.

I just wondered if anybody had comments on how well, or not, this cold galvanising product works as a barrier in place of epoxy.
