Could any of the engine experts on here please give me their views on this engine,or indeed anyone who has had one in a boat.Am I right to think this is based on a Mitsubishi engine and a higher revving engine than the Volvo or Cat equivalent engine ?Any idea what revs this engine will cruise at and max out at ? Reliability and cost of part would be important issues to me

Much more information needed DT64 does not meet any of my Deutz nomenclature.

You are certainly incorrect in thinking Deutz would market diesel engine from anybody else. These guys sell their technology to third parties for example Deutz was responsible for the design of the current Volvo Penta D4/6.

From the information supplied have no clue what engine you have.

Can we try again......

4 or 6 cylinders?

Air or water cooled?

No clue regarding broad brush comments regarding Volvo or CAT rated speeds unless models quoted.

Only broad brush comment I can make is that Deutz are in general super reliable motors.
 
As far as I have been told it is a DT 64 which is supposed to be a 6 cylinder turbo charged water cooled engine rated at 159 hp, through ZF Hurth gearboxes- sorry I don't know anything else but should have more info tomorrow-will try and take some pictures.Yes it may well be the Vetus engine tinkicher0 suggested

I think the engine is the Vetus DT64.

Block does look remarkably like a Deutz / Volvo D6E though.

Beware........DCA additive in cooling system absolutely essential on these later Deutz common rail motors.

Deutz BF6 1012 2,650 rpm real sweet motor.

Marketed by Vetus as a marine motor however with one very critical drawback, has a dry manifold and turbocharger, think Vetus have dropped them now.
 
oh that doesn't sound so good !! I think it's a 2003 engine is there any chance its not a dry manifold ? what should I look for and is this a real no no or just more maintenance ?

Look for signs of milky lube oil and leaks from the head gasket area esp close to the front left of the motor. As said, this motor needs DCA additive in the coolant to prevent problems with the liner glands and liner flanges. Also can suffer badly from combustion deck fretting.


Dont worry too much though if you can't see any leaks. I tend to see the worst of the worst. The rest of the engine is sweet.

No, I see bus engines with 20,000 hrs on the clock. I am just giving you the worst case scenario. The D6E / Deutz is a fine motor if kept up to.

Deck fretting is due to microscopic movement between head, steel head gasket and block which wears it over a very large number of operating cycles.

Liner and liner gland damage due to ultrasonic cavitation within the water jacket. DCA additive will combat this by putting a sacrificial layer between the water and the metal.


Stop fretting..... Fnaaar fnaar. :D

What Tinkicker sees is the result of high cycle operation with lousy maintenance, nothing to do with overheating.

Vetus performed marinisation and volume too small to put proper water cooled manifold set up into production. If you take a close look you will see glass wrapped dry manifold boxed in neat fabricated housing as with ANY flavour of engine employing a dry manifold fuel economy is very good however at anything over 80% load factor gasket will fail. Look for signs of soot on glass wrapping.

Worth remembering that both Tinkicker and I see all the real ugly stuff.
