There is a very interesting group in Yahoo, called "Old 2 stroke Detroit Diesels" where you can get all kind of information. Maybe you should try it,
Good luck,

Try this website Yacht Survey - Comparing Diesel Types
Detroit 2 stroke diesels are still common engines in all sorts of machinery including boats. Another forumite, Divemaster1 has a Detroit equipped boat. Maybe worth a PM

Anyone know of a simple 'idiots guide' for these 2-strokes?

Been busy and away a bit...
Got two 6/71 TI's myself ... Got 880 pages of Service manual on CD ... and know a fair bit on tuning and servicing.... Simple engines to work on ... just need to do things in the right order to get it sweet .... Lovely engines .... some thirsty ... but only if more than 60 HP / per liter is taken out....
