Just remembered my other question! When I removed the backing from the depth transducer I could not detect any sealant, should there have been some under the rubber washer or not?

I'm not sure i fully understand the question but if there is a gasket washer between the head and the hull then there should be no need to use sealant but the intructions that came wth my Seafarer echosounder (ca 1978) say "The installation should be rendered watertight by using a sealing compound on all mating surfaces" There is no mention of a gasket washer though. I think this is a time when the choice is yours.

Remember, good though they are, the Sikaflex componds are adhesive sealants so it may be difficult to remove items that have been "Sikaflexed" in place

I just fitted one myself and took the old one off.

In both cases there is sealant between the device and the hull on the outside of the hull. It's here that everything needs to be watertight. On the inside you just have a rubber washer no sealant. If it's not watertight ((on the outside) this rubber washer can hold the most of the leak and you can redo it. Also this rubber washer dustributes the forces from the thing you screw on the inside over the transducer to hold evrything in place evenly.
