I have seen adverts for depth sounders with the sensor being fitted to the transom. Can anyone please comment, does this work OK or must I have an in hull sensor: I see various ads for these products and they seem lost cost and good value Thanks I have a 7 M power day boat, recently acquired and this seems an ideal add on Thanks

transom mounted

I have in the past fitted a transom mounted depth sounder to a maxum speed boat. Follow the instructions in the pack use appropiate tools and the result will be excellent, great value for money to be had for a wee bit of DIY. Good luck.

They do work OK, if fitted properly, but don't expect them to be very effective at cruising speed.
Oh, and assuming of course that your boat has sterndrive(s) or outboard(s): they're useless with shaft boats.

Mine is transom mounted and works well at all speeds.

Perhaps those that have had problems at cruising speeds have not been fitted in the best place. I know that they can be affected by the propwash or if they are mounted in an area of particular water aeration even by following the instructions.

If you still have problems you might want to investigate relocating the sensor to an area on the transom with less water disruption at cruise speeds. Just a thought.

Transom mounted sounder

Great THANKS to all: I have Z drive:

If anyone can add detail as to how to specifically locate the best place that would be great: And please do not fall on the floor laughing but I really do place screws into the transom below or at water line?

Thanks

Sounder on transom

To add to my reply I now also see sounders that are glued to the inside of the hull - as this must be just as easy as fitting to the transom are there any + or - for either glue to inside of hull or transom fitting: The other thing is whether I wait as i see fish finders usually have depth display built in, but I suppose that is a conventional sounder installation; boat out of water etc

I ve tried both locations, and inside was far better. If the search engine is working there have been plenty of threads about how to mount this. If you cant find it, maybe we need to have another !

If you fit it internally, don'y use anything other than a 2 component epoxy glue, silicone or sikaflex acts like a shock absorber and you won't get a good signal. The best stuff we have found is Hempel epoxy filler as this is much thicker than Araldite type glues so it doesn't run out from under the transducer while its hardening, be careful when mixing not to get air into the mix.
