I have inherited Siemens VDO instruments on my newly acquired motor sailer - including depth gauges in cockpit and inside helm. Cockpit gauge is kaput and needs replacing, but I'm told that Siemens VDO are no longer available. Can I fit someone else's gauge (Raytheon?) using the existing VDO transducer - or does the complete package have to be installed?

Have a look on Airmar as in airmar.com. They do transducers for everything, you will be able to cross refer what you've got and what you can use with it.

If I read you correctly you have a depth sounder which works OK on one readout but the other is kaput. This might indicate that you have just a repeater indicator failed. Or does it indicate you have 2 separate systems?
Come back and tell us which it appears to be. A repater may use a NMEA code in which many different indicators will work or it may be just a DC connection. Is there a separate power supply to the kaput indicator? How many wires go into it and of what type?
Let us know olewill

Why waste a lot of time if it is old anyhow.
I had same problem on my motorsailor and messed about for weeks, finaly bought a new Nasa Target 2 sounder, fitted it in 4 hours and works perfectly with big digital backlite readout.
Found a good spot in the bilges clear of the engine and keel and just glued the transducer down after testing first with 'Blue Tack'.
£84 from Marine superstore.delivered in two days.
Good luck
