Depth Finder on Maxum

I have just been installing a VHF on my new (1997) boat when I discovered that the depth gauge has an extra connection going to a momentary action accessory switch. When pressed down the gauge starts beeping and the 'depth' steps in 1 ft increments. Anyone know what this is for?

The depth gauge is factory fitted and on a Maxum 2100SC. The gauge works fine in the water but not tried this other switch as currently on a trailer.

All help much appreciated and because I am new to boating I am sure there is a simple answer but it wasn't covered on the Powerboating course!

Also does anyone have a manual for a Maxum?

Thanks for your help

That is the setting for your depth alarm so you can have it go off at whatever depth worries you. It is one of the better gauges on a Maxum much better than the fuel gauges which Kangaroo around and never settle.

Thanks for the answer.

Agree with comment about the fuel gauges - they don't appear to give any idea about how much fuel is in the tank. Also the speedo doesn't read at anything less than 25 knots and even over this it is 'shaky'.

Other than this I chuffed to bits.

Just to mention but dont worry, check now and again the bond between top and bottom by lookinig at the front of the boat just under the rubbing strake, a few have known to come apart here.

You may find that there are two alarms. When depressing the switch in either of the two availble directions on my boat (2000 2100sc) you can set either the deep water alarm or shallow water alarm as indicated by either DAL or SAL on the LCD read out. I've got the manual at home for it somewhere and I know you can also set it up to read in ft, metres ot fathoms with various switch sequences on ignistion. PM me if you need to know more and I'll dig out the instructions.

Oh by the way I've had that problem with the speedo. Turned out to be a damadged/blocked pito tube which I am told are quite vulnerable on this boat's leg for some reason. Get it checked or replaced and it should be ok. Agree with you on the fuel gauges they are effing useless.

Either of you with the Maxums know of a dealer where I could possibly purchase part of the rear cover for my 1997 3000SCR. Russel Simpson at Newhaven tell me they cannot supply, any info on well stocked Maxum dealer would help, thanks

I have found R-S to be hopeless but Maxum have now appointed several other UK dealers after R-S problems of last year. If you visit the Maxum website www.maxumboats.com then go to international dealers you will get a complete list for the u.k. Not had to try any yet because I havn't had any significant problems.

P S If you find a good one please let me know.

I bought my boat from Picton Boats in Bridgend 2 years ago. It is run by two Picton brothers Huw and Dave. I had a couple of problems with the seals around my windscreen and they came out on a Sunday to Penarth to fix which was a 40 mile round trip for them. They also build their own boats so they know what their doing and are generally quite frank with their customers. You can contact them on 01656 724444. Tell them I (Shaun Oxenham) sent you, I might get some discount on my next boat if I ever upgrade;-) and I would buy from them again if I liked the boat in question.

Another great resource for Maxum boats is www.maxumboatparts.com ,excellent for looking up the part numbers and understanding the sub assemblies of different parts of your boat. You can't order on line though, you still have to go through a dealer but makes life alot easier if you give them the precise part code. There are also some basic but useful 3d diagrams of the contruction of the boats. A pity other manufacturers don't provide this sort of information. I've got a feeling though that the above site only goes back to manufacturer's year 1998.
