I'm ordering a Asymmetric for my First 285. Currently have a spinnaker but find it all a bit of an effort with pole etc when just the two of us.

So going for an asymmetric - but instead of having a snuffer I'm going to have a mesh bag that will go along the side deck with a "mouth" to feed the sail from and into. Deployed with the spin halyard in the normal way and retrieved with a line that goes from the cockpit through the bag and attached to the middle of the sail.

It's just the ease of the systems on dinghies like Lasers that made me want to do it that way but haven't see any on yachts - has anyone a similar system for a downwind sail?

Ideally I'd like a retractable bowsprit as well but that I think will get expensive.

Interested to know what you think.

Do you have a loose footed main?

If yes, go for the letterbox hoist/drop. Assy goes betwixt main and boom. Helps stop it blowing aft.

If no, then launch/drop forward of the lee shroud area. Interesting fact: if a bow-centric crew member applies tension to the luff (opposing the hoisting force) and holds the luff tape tight to the lee side of the luff of the jib/genoa, the spi/assy will not 'inflate'. It stays meekly stuck to the jib/genoa. Until said crew opens the gap. Then it'll set 'just like that'.
