I have recently purchased a Delta anchor which when launched swings back and takes out chunks of fibreglass. I have noticed some boats with a double roller which tilts when anchor is launched and some additionally have a loop to control the chain end of the anchor flicking up. Does anyone have experience of overcoming a delinquent Delta. Anchor weight is 25kg.

The flat shape of the Delta shank causes the anchor to be quite unstable when stowed or when approaching the stowed position. I have attached a couple of small pieces of plastic on the cheeks of the bow roller, above the height of the chain. In combination with a slotted roller that holds the shank centrally this has overcome all such problems on my boat.

It's called a bascule and replaces the single roller in the fairlead with up to 4 roller/retainers.
It's essential for automatic self-stowing and self-launching anchors connected to an electric anchor winch.
Your alternatives to fitting a bascule are:

1. Using a lashing to your pulpit to hold the anchor free of the gel-coat.
2. Stowing the anchor, in secure lashings, on deck or in your chain-locker.
3. Drilling a hole, through anchor shank and fairlead so a drop-nose pin can be inserted to hold the anchor free of the gel-coat.
4. Face the gel-coat area being chipped with a stainless-steel plate shaped to fit the bow-section and epoxied and screwed into position. This does require some panel-beating skills and is worth doing in any case, if you intend to anchor at all frequently.

Compared to say a CQR a Delta is far easier to stow and keep away from gnawing gel-coat.

Bascules

Most chandlery wholesalers have a series of standard fabrications (try Plastimo UK).

You need the width between the faces of your anchor fairlead and the centres of the hole for the bow-roller axe.

If your boat is a recent Bavaria (there are some benefits in owning one) Bavaria produce standard bascules for each of their models.
Before ordering do check - they have a habit of non-standardisation.
