Evening all!

The latest boat to come on my purchasing radar is a Dell Quay Ranger of 1966/67 vintage. The hull and superstructure are sound with no rot whatsoever and no "soft bits", but her paint is flaking and she's looking a bit tired. I wondered if anyone had a rough ballpark figure of what it would cost to strip her back to bare wood and repaint and re-antifoul from top of the radar mast to the bottom of the keel? Either done by a yard, or myself.

Cheers!

The hot moulded Fairey Hull shell and the plywood upperworks respond very well to epoxy coating and two pack paint systems. If you'r going back to bare wood it makes sense to take the opportunity. It will be a much longer interval before the job needs to be revisited.

DIY - sandpaper, scrapers, masking tape, paint - less than £1000.

Yard - I bet its 3 man weeks, so 120 hours, @ £50 is £6000, plus paint, plus VAT, about £8.5k, you may get charged a bit for yard moves and indoor storage which could add a significant chunk.

What about the machinery? There's significant cost there.

(I've owned a Huntsman 28 which is the same hull for 11 years and maintained it myself, so my guess work above might be fairly close)

Edit - unless they quote for spray painting in Awlgrip in which case talk to the mortgage company first...

Thanks for the estimates, they were broadly in line with what I was expecting but then again having not owned a wooden boat before I thought it best to get a second opinion!

She's been re-engined quite a few times in her life - originally twin 6cyl petrols, then twin diesels, a single diesel and a new transom was put in in the mid 80s and then the current owner put in a Volvo AD41 with duoprop outdrive. Mechanically she's sweet as a nut.

Cheers

You are certainly in the best place to own a Ranger 27. If you haven't already done so contact the Ranger owners club http://www.dellquayranger.supanet.com/index.htm, they are also based in Guernsey and may be able to offer support and advice.
If it's the boat I'm thinking of then it's a rare Tropical version (aft cockpit). If you do go ahead with it make sure you start a restoration thread on here so we can see progress.

Already contacted them to see if they had past info on the boat - a fount of knowledge and very nice people! She's an aft cabin version, I'm not sure but I think the Tropical has already been sold if it's the one I'd seen up for sale.

No photos as yet, but sea-trialling Saturday and will dutifully take some pictures then.

Dear All,

I have no idea what I am doing as I have never done any of this "Posting Stuff" but hope this is helpful for any owners of the famed Dell Quay Ranger, (designed and built by my late father in law). I recently re-furbished all the windows in hull # 871, (TASHONA), and had a heck of a time trying to find new window rubbers, (Seals). I eventually found a great company, "Seals Direct Ltd. (sales@sealsplusdirect.co.uk) who are in New Milton, Hants, BH25 6RH. Tele: # 01425-617-722. They had everything I needed and were great to deal with. So, if anyone has a similar job to do, these are the people to go to.

Cheers,

Roger Phillips
