I'm looking (very seriously) at a vessel in Dorset this weekend, however my mooring is on the Blackwater in Essex.

If I buy in Dorset, what costs have I got to factor in for moving a 22' boat that far? (She does not come with a trailer).

One option I have thought of is to spend the summer cruising the south coast, purchasing moorings for a week or three at a time, eventually ending up on the Blackwater towards laying up time, but I don't really have the experience or the available hands for crusing in unfamiliar waters (I know the Solent but not much else!).

Any thoughts?

Short term moorings are expensive. The cheapest option could be to hire a suitable trailer if you have a friend with a vehicle that can tow it.

The seller may be able to let you use his mooring for a while Then you could enjoy a bit of sailing in the Solent before bringing her home. What type of boat is it?

Anderson 22. It's at the very top end of my budget so I don't want to spend too much on this!

a lot is going to depend on the type of craft and where it is currently (ie in or out the water / marina / open water etc)

flatbed lorry with own crane would probably work out best / cheapest overall in most situations - just ring up a one of the boat haulage firms and ask.

Ring Dale Barrett in Burnham on Crouch 01621 855257. Very good, and well priced. He moved our 22 footer for the guy I sold it to.

Anderson 22 will make it cheaper - will sit on a flat bed with chocks.

I cannot give you any clue on transport costs but if you like the boat why not see if you can do deal for the present owner to sail it round with you? (assuming he is experienced at sailing it)

I was quoted £500 from Solent to the far south of Cornwall for a 21 fotter, but would have only been £350 if they could find another one for the return trip. Speak to David Wolff - he quoted a very good price for me (got his own 4x4 and trailer with a hoist, so no need for craning if already ashore)

We sold our first boat (a 22ft Etap) to a guy from Cork. He arranged to get a trailer local to us in Emsworth. He drove from Cork to collect trailer/boat. When he arived at the marina, it was obvious that the trailer was unsuitable. So he went all the way back to Cork (this IS for real) got a trailer over there, came back to Emsworth, loaded the boat and went back to Cork, phew!

Somewhere at the bottom is a new forum for crew seeking, might be worth a try.

Spending the summer exploring the length of The Channel coast (well te eastern end) would be great.

Otherwise, if the yacht and rig are OK, what better way to get her home than a series of easy day sails. You will do nearly all of it on Leisure Folios so the charts won't cost much.

Poole - Lymington 20 miles.
Lymington - Chichester 23 miles.
Chichester - Littlehampton 25 miles.
Littlehampton - Newhaven 24 miles.
Newhaven - Rye 34 miles.
Rye - Folkstone/Dover 23/28 miles.
Folkstone/Dover - Ramsgate 20miles or less.
Then a biggie across the Thames 40 miles or so.

The beauty of going along the coast in short hops is that you can start early or late to suit the tide and any headlands you will encounter, and still sail in daylight.

What a great weeks sailing!

If the weather turns and you abandon the trip, a 22 footer won't cost the earth to leave until the following weekend.

You could try Chris Nixon of Debbages, Ipswich. 01473 601169.

He's a good bloke and is often doing a run to Poole and back so you may catch an 'empty' one way.
