Is this (in the opinion of the panel) a stupid idea?

Musing on the possibility of son and girlfriend, my mum and myself taking Rhoda Rose (CW28 ketch) from the Blackwater down to Ramsgate, spend a night on the pontoon, then accompany said son and girlfriend back to Blackwater in his new (old) boat.

Idea being to be on hand in case of need. Or, as my wife suggests, we would have two boats to pack up and need rescuing (there's positive thinking for you).

In other words are two heads better then one or is there twice the chance of a migraine?

That sounds like the way to go to me, you will have your own lifeboat and tool shed for the trip and given the potential for newly purchased boats to deliver unexpected surprises the company can only be helpful.

It should be quite good fun to sail in company with ones offspring too, he might even buy you a drink when you arrive.

I don't think it's stupid. Peace of mind is worth a lot. It gets over the no fixed VHF issue but whilst not intending to pour troubled oil on the suggestion, the ability of one yacht to help another in bad weather is not easy. But simply being there to provide advice will be handy.

I suspect though, it will be a different boat with that bottom and the prop clean.

Not at all a bad idea and sailing in company can be fun, as well a practical, in case of engine problems you are there for a tow if required, or at least moral support.

Absolutely no doubt it will feel like a totally different boat, the effects of that much growth is amazing. He can also practice cross estuary navigation and you can practice sailing slower than normal.

CW28? Not,exactly a speed machine!

The marina at Ramsgate lifted the new boat and pressure washed her. Out, clean, quick inspection of prop and skin fittings and back in the water in 35 mins. Spectacular performance. £90 seemed like value for money to me.

Moving the boat (soon to be renamed 'Lively', she felt much much more responsive. So fingers crossed for the sail back. Still a niggling engine problem that I shall ask about over on the PBO forum.

So, weather dependant, we may take Rhoda Rose down to Ramsgate Thursday or Friday, overnight on the pontoon and back the following day. Just need to get to boat for my copy of CTTE to work out timings.
