I am taking my yachtmaster motor exam shortly and require some sea miles 1,200 in total. I am an advanced powerboat instructor so therefore have all of the theory, but want to move onto the big boats. If their is anyone who can help then please could you advise.

I et a bit agrevated at this type of aproch to YM. Just zoom round in circle in some one elses boat till the required sea miles are notched up. Then become expert and presumably If you came on my boat, I would then have to come cap in hand for my YM off you!! I thought the idea was that you became profisiant and then took YM after you had experienced all conditions over a number of years. OK so I'm old fashioned................??

Re: motor YM

is is not acceptable? Says who? In any case, in a sailing boat, all those miles you simply must have done under power (sails down) would be "motorboat" miles, no?

imho, the biggest toughest thing in a powerboat is parking the thing in a marina. Cos after all, nobody can do more than a few hundred miles in a powerboat really, range max 500 miles. Not like sailing where range is much extended, and parking is far easier.

imho, YM should ask for lots of exp parking boats, not loads of seamiles listening to engine drone.

Answering the question, we're off to antibes from portsmuff, tho not till next april, which may not be much use as too late so probly see you there.

Incidentally, when you do get a skipper spot, get the boat out, put it back, get boat out, put it back, lots of times, train the crew. Some skippers ok at this, others need more practise imho. One of them, off to barcelona, spent all evening poncing about with charts and pencils, next morning loosened bowline, tried to let go at the stern but boat moved forward, then tried to reverse to pick up crew on the shore, but bowline on, so bit more revs, bowline broke free, and smashed the quayside lecky box and stufed the swim platform...

Re: motor YM

Thanks for that. I do not need to do all the miles in one go as pilotage, mooring etc has to be involved together with night passages. I would be interested in joining you next April so please get in contact nearer the time.
