Hi,

My starbord Volvo Penta duoprop 290 DP is slow to engage in reverse. Forward is no problem. Engine is KAD 300 with electronic gear level. I am wondering if the gearcable needs to be adjusted or something else could cause this. Any comments please

Cone clutch worn...or more or just as likely...it slipping because of the usual water ingress to the gear oil on the 290. Avoided by making sure the seal isn’t nipped or putting sealant over the drain plug each year at oil change.

Hi,
Just wanted to let you know as others could have same silly issue... I found that the gear actuator moves a few milimeters (toward reverse) AFTER ignition is off. Once ignition is on the actuator moves again 1-2 milimeter (toward forward). Therefore my adjustment in neutral (with ignition off) was not correct. After adjusting the cable with ignition on the gear engages perfectly. So remember always to adjust the gear cable WITH IGNITION ON (BUT NOT WITH RUNNING ENGINE THOUGH!!)
