Have I made the wrong deduction but didn't delaying the start actually make sure that the competitors would get more of the bad weather for longer and certainly for the leg out to the rock?
No reason to think so. The weather is not as bad (or expected to be) as '79.
The number of boats that have pulled out would suggest that a lot of skippers are making skipper like decisions so I presume those that are going on are doing the same.
The conditions I have heard described so far are challenging and give the press an ideal chance to whip up some hysteria
If I understood correctly, the reasoning was that delaying would mean that the faster (bigger) boats would have plenty of sea room, while the slower boats would be near shelter if they need it.
IIRC in '79, the fastest boats were running for home, ahead of the worst, while the slower boats were trying to beat into the worst of it on the nose while a long way from shelter.
