The NOVA refers to the fitting out - ie the gray 'plastic' rather than the wood finish
CWS is central winch system where some models had lines brought back to one winch mounted mid-traveller in front of helmsman. Usually when a self-tacking jib was on so he/she could sail single handed.
Drop is the lazy jack and sail bag which Dehler were early to introduce
The number refers to the length (!!! - sorry, couldnt resist)
DB dosent mean the dogs testicles but I cant remember what is does mean
cheers
Richard

The Nova Top is an uprated version with better displacement ratio and different rudder shape, ie it's meant to be a better performer. I think they stuck a taller mast and heavier keel on the original Dehler 34, which was an evolution of the DB2. The DB2 was the original offshore racing design.

The number of different versions of Dehlers is quite bewildering, so FWIW, here's my experience on some of them:
DB1 & DB2: 10.1 m LOA, racer/cruiser, tall & bendy 3/4 rig.
Dehler 34 (Optima 101): first cruising version of DB2. deck-stepped 7/8 rig, mahogany (or teak) interior, central saloon table, bog between main & fore cabin, double berth aft. up to 1988.
Dehler 34 (Optima 106): 2nd cruising version, bog moved aft, double babin on other side, remaining accommodation moved for'd 2 or 3 feet. Maindrop lazyjack system fitted. Don't be fooled by the 10.6 metre LOA quoted for this model - it's still the same hull (10.1m) Up to 1990.
Dehler 34 Top: eliptical rudder + 'upsidedown keel' = stiffer. Slightly taller rig.
Nova version has offwhite sprayed joinery with mahogany capping. How far this extends in the joinery seems to vary from boat to boat. Up to 1994.
There were a few options, such a (rare) shoal-draft of about 1.2 M, wheel steering & self-tacking jib. Engine was 18 or 27 HP Yanmar.
Dehler 36CWS: 1988-1995-ish. Cruiser/racer Maindrop system, wheel steered, electric central winch ahead of binnacle with all lines ducted to clutches either side of winch. Huge Dinette to starboard and 'straightline' galley to port. Some of the Nova interiors were a bit overpowering, & later ones seemed to be 'skimped' on trim (e.g. 1960's car carpeteing instead of holly inlay cabin sole) Engine 27 HP Yanmar.
Dehler 36DB is the racer/cruiser version of Dehler 36CWS, and so has no Maindrop system or electric central winch.
Dehler 37CR or CWS: 1994-1997-ish.Revamped and elongated 36. similar layout to 36, but some of the interior styling went a bit Bendytub (IMHO, of course, unless you really like white joinery with red plastic capping & upholstery), but they did some in teak which are much nicer & more expensive.
Dehler 35CWS: 10.5 m loa cruiser, keel-stepped, 2 spreader mast. Layout similar to Dehler 34 Top, but longer & more headroom. 2x electric winches. Wheel steered. 1994-1997. There was no Nova or Top version as such, but all models have some white joinery in places (e.g. galley). Most of the interior of mine is dark cherry.

There's more, but I hope this helps. Oh, one final thing about Dehlers: Osmosis - Vas ist das?

Central winch

The reason for my asking is that my current boat has a central winch. At first I was apprehensive: the winch is situated in front of the cabin entry. I foresaw blue toes. But that doesn't happen often. And being able to trim the headsail from the safety of the cockpit instead of having to slide down to the lee of the boat, I find that really comfortable.

Are there other boats with a central winch?

Re: Central winch

Lots of big ocean racers have central coffee grinders to drive winches, but the winches are on the uphill and downhill sides coz the trimmer needs to be able to see the sail.

(Indigo has a central winch, but it's on the foredeck. )

Re: Central winch

Good listings Rudophl-Hart but you missed out the 34S. Keelstepped mast with taller rig. A fantastic sailing boat but limited in accommodation below. No deck hatch in the forward cabin, access via a hatch in the forward bulkhead from the heads, good size saloon, nav station and galley, curtain to aft cabin behind nav station. Yanmar 15 hp engine gave sufficient power. One of the best boats I ever owned.
