Yawn,
as pointed out in a thread by B1 recently Defra have issued a supplemental consultation here on the handover of BW to a charity.

Readers here may say what the blazes this has to do with the Thames. Since the government has threatened to include the EA navigations at a later date, then I suggest that it is of interest.

There is a pdf towards the bottom of the pare referred to above, in it is a lengthy and a bit obscure discussion and a series of questions.

The only one that I can get my head around is:-

para 43 OPTION 3: Include NWC as a public authority in Schedule 1 of the FOIA. This will bring it within the scope of the FOIA and the EIRs.

Charities are not generally answerable to the public in any practical way, but the rivers and canals are a national (rather than a purely local) asset and their owners should be answerable in full to the public at large.

My answer will be "yes" to the above and I invite folks to at least submit a response, or even agree with me.

My experience with the Thames TWA Order shows that individual responses were listened to (grammar) and acted upon.

Responses close on 24th. October, so get your keyboards active and make your views known.

The document in question is available via the link above and responses to the bit below.

Any enquiries regarding this document/publication should be sent to us at:

If it is clear that the public are not interested we may get an organisation that can do pretty well as it likes with no recourse.
