I have analogue raymarine radar powered from the old style c80 plotter. The default setting brings the radar in standby mode. I would like to make the default to switch the radar off. I can't see any options for this in any of the settings.
Is this possible? Is my only option to break into the wiring loom and add a separate on/off switch?

I have a Raymarine radar and C80 plotter bought at the same time but when I switch on the plotter, the radar does not turn on until I press the correct soft key. I can put the radar on STANDBY or ON or OFF from the plotter. The instructions are on the boat so I can't advise the sequence of Menu / buttons to push. I'll look next time I'm on the boat and let you know if you still have a problem.

To switch radar on and off on c80 press left hand start button again after start up.two boxes appear lower left side trans/standby, on/off press what you need.hope this helps

It doesn't answer the OP's question, which I am also interested in. I have a C70 with radar; I hardly used it at all last year as it was mounted at the chart table, but now it's in the cockpit I expect to use it more. I don't know whether it comes on with the radar in Standby or Off, but I hope it's the latter otherwise there will be a lot of energy wasted heating the magnetron when I have no intention of using the radar.

When you say "on", do you mean standby or transmit? I think we all know it's not in transmit mode when you first turn the plotter on, but the OP thinks his comes on in standby (which means the magnetron heater is on and using power).

The default setting on my C80 / radar is OFF.
When I turn on the plotter, the radar scanner is OFF.
The soft keys allow me to switch the scanner ON then I have the choice of TRANSMIT or STANDBY.
Standby means the antenna is not rotating, as indicated by the icon in the top right corner, and it is not transmitting
but the magnetron is warm and ready for action.
You don't need to cut the wire and add an ON/OFF switch.

Is this possible?

I have always found Raymarine products and documentation rather unintuitive, so I have written (for test this season) my own notes on the C80/Radar set up. Here's an extract:-

The scanner icon (top right of the display) indicates the current status of the radar.
Greyed out - this indicates that the scanner is currently not powered (OFF mode). When radar not required but display in use for other applications e.g. Chart.
When OFF is selected, system countdowns - during this time you cannot re-power the scanner.
Static - the scanner is powered on but is not currently transmitting (STANDBY mode). Antenna does not rotate, the scanner does not transmit and the radar data is removed from the screen. This is a power save mode used when radar not needed for short time periods. When you return to transmit mode, the magnetron does not need to warm up. This is the default mode.
Rotating - the scanner is transmitting (TRANSMIT/TX mode).

Use the POWER button softkeys to select the required mode as follows

(pressing briefly with Display functioning):-

RADAR/PALETTE: Shows the softkeys (SK).
SK:RADAR; TX/STDBY
SK:SCANNER; ON/OFF
SK:PALETTE; DAY/NIGHT

Cheers

Sorry for the confusionto clarify when I turn on my plotter the radar goes to standby, and I then use the power button on the plotter
to turn it off, because most of the time the radar is not in use.
Actionoptics: I'm interested to know whether you needed to do anything to your setup to make the radar startup off.
