Does anybody have experience with these items & which manufacturer would you choose? if you were to replace yours, that is. I am thinking of fitting a pair to a princess with 230 hp and 1-3/4" shafts. any opinions welcome . thanks in anticipation. Rob

Over the last 3 years & 3600 miles I have used "Halyard" seals and not a drop passed the lips! (The shafts run in oil thats held within the seal.)

Re: \"Deep sea seals\"

There are several 'NO LEAK' type seals on the market, Deep Sea Seal; PSS Seal; Halyard; Ambassador; Vetus & Volvo(and probably others).
Deep Sea Seal & PSS Seals use the principle of a compressed rubber bellows with a graphite ring rubbing against a stainless ring. Both work well but I consider the PSS is better engineered. The Deep Sea Seal had problems many years ago but these have now been sorted out.
The Volvo use a rubber seal which clamps onto the stern tube and has two internal lips which rub on he shaft - like an oil seal - I believe only made in metric sizes.
The Halyard, Ambassador & Vetus use oil seals running in oil. All work fine.
The cheapest are Volvo & Deep Sea Seal followed by PSS and then the oil lubricated ones.
They do them for low speed, up to 1800 RPM and a High speed version up to 3000 RPM.
Ambassador Marine - Tel 01962 775405
Deep Sea Seals - Tel 01705 492123
Halyard Marine - Tel 01722 710922
PSS - Tel 01582 404400
Vetus - Tel 01703 861033
Volvo - Tel 01923 228544
PBO did an article on these in April 1998(I had it on my desk as I am also thinking of fitting a Deep Sea Seal - it's the only one that will fit in the space available on my boat)
If you want a copy of the article PM me.

Thanks for the info! I will now progress further. I believe that Halyard have stopped manufacturing their model though?

Re: \"Deep sea seals\"

I've just had my boat sink thanks to a Deep Sea Seal. It was about 17 years old and appeared to be in good condition. Somehow it appears that the rubber had softened, reducing its grip on the shaft. It had slid up the shaft allowing massive ingress of water, too much for the automatic bilge pump to deal with, causing her to sink at her mooring. I am intending to re-engine this winter, necessitating new shaft, seal, etc, etc. Needless to say, I will not be using one of these type of seals in the new installation.

Bill,

I was just about to post to say that one of the Christinas in the the Fairey Club had sunk due to a deep sea seal failure and hey presto there you were registered as a new user.

Hows the father in law getting on with Just the job? I have sold the huntress and bought playtime II, but you'll have read that in Fairey News, bad luck about the boat sinking, still, Iam sure you'll have her ship shape again soon.

Many thanks for the insight into the "Deep sea seal" it would appear that several manufacturers are no longer manufacturing them? I guess that I will stick to a dripping gland and damp bilge.
Many thanks

Re: \"Deep sea seals\"

Hi Ben, Thanks for the sympathy. F in Law had a good season with "Just the Job", but he has found her a bit too boisterous for his 74 year old bones, so has decided to sell her next year after attending to some cosmetics he didn't have time to do last winter. Incidentally, she has the good old fashioned type of stern gland which drips like fury, but is infinitely preferable to the "Deep Sea Seal", which in my case did a lifetime's dripping in the course of one night!

P.S. Best wishes to all for the New Year.
