I've just epoxied a new plywood deck and now want to paint it. I envisage using Blakes deckpaint (or similar). Would I need a primer on the epoxy or would a light sanding do?

Hi rjp!

I used International's deck paint over epoxy (West) some years ago, after sanding down really well with an 80 grade glasspaper. Wiped it down with a solvent to ensure all the dust etc was cleared and on it went. Excellent adherence that hadn't deteriorated by the time I sold the boat five years later.

Hope this helps

Good sailing!

Thanks Jerryat,

That was my initial thought, then I saw some reference to someone using a 2 part primer on epoxy and started having second thoughts. International's Web page says their deckpaint is suitable for any substrate, so your post bears this out. I'll probably go along your route.

G'day John,

You can paint just about anything over an epoxy with very few problems, applying epoxy over other non epoxy paints is the problem area.

The only thing I would be concerned with prior to painting, would be to ensure I had enough epoxy covering the ply, as getting back to it will be difficult after painting.

I normally look for at least 3 coats of epoxy resin over ply for a deck area, then add a light coat of epoxy primer just to make life a little easier if I have to get back to the epoxy later for minor repairs. If you have the three coats of resin, then a light sanding with a 125 grit to remove the gloss only will be fine.

Avagoodweekend.

Someone painted the deck of my boat with Interdeck and despite the fact that is a very amateur looking job, runs brush marks etc which indicates that it may not have been prepared very well the paint is still there and is showing no signs of coming off. Go on take a chance and good luck.
