Decking

No, it ain't right! If it is an older boat, someone may have used galvanised fastenings as an ill-advised economy measure, and the galvanising has now all gone, leaving unprotected steel. Some boats are iron-fastened, but iron and steel are very different animals.

The previous poster is wrong in saying steel is not used as a fastening material. Almost all wooden fishing boats this century, at least those over about 30ft will have been fastened with steel dump nails hot dip galvanised. These are extremely common in working boats but very rare in pleasure boats. In a trawler the fastenings can be expected to last 50 odd years IF they were installed properly. In re-planking and re-decking my White Heather I used 3 1/2 inch dumps into pre drilled holes, the dumps being well dipped in waterproof grease before being driven in, each with a caulking cotten grommet under the head. The heads were counter bored into the planking then these holes stopped with read lead putty in the hull or pitch in the deck.

Hope this helps..
