I made a project out of cedar tongue and groove planking,I finished it using Minwax Spar Urethane. In just 5 short months exposed to the weather ,the top finish of my new bars are cracked and peeling.According to Minwax this is normal and it requires periodic maintainance.Gimme a break!
My question to all is ,
What type clear finish is used on the decks of boats and ships with hardwood floors.I know these finishes last for years without the so called periodic maintainance,as Minwax states.

Where is this wood, outside or inside and what is it on? I can help you but need to know where it is and what it's used for.

The wood is outside,it is being used for the tops of three(tavern type) bars. They are on an outside deck exposed to all of the elements.

sorry but...

the deck finish that lasts for years on boats is untreated teak. varnish work on yachts needs to be re-coated twice a year to be sure of looking good.
some of the domestic products like ronseal wood stain last longer though they don't look so pretty

Re: sorry but...

try deks oil D1 and D2.....will take about 25/30 slap 'em on coats but will last years and only needs a quick rub with D2 in future to refresh....gives a fair 'gloss' finish.....far better outside then the rest unless you require a perfect finish then only good varnish will do....

In that case, I would either leave the cedar bare,(naturally low rot timber) or treat with a sikkens product, ceetol, use Varnol, a swedish product, (very good on cedar) available through black dog stores in the UK, or use a german product called Coelans, if you want a gloss finish. Normal varnish even 10 coats, (minimum) will not last long on hiorizontal surfaces exposed to the weather. hope this helps you.
