Hello,
I'm new to repainting my decks with antislip. Can I also paint over the old treadmaster or do I have to renew it in the colour I want? If I have to renew it, how do I get the old treadmaster off?
Thanks

I think there may be a special paint to paint Treadmaster, assuming its sound.

Taking the old stuff off is, I understand, a job and a half as its glued with a 2 part (epoxy ?) adhesive

Google for treadmaster + paint

Treadmaster supply special paint for their product that is available in all the colours. It's expensive, but very, very good and long-lasting.

If you are considering changing the colour of your existing TM using their paint (doesn't 'feel' like paint 'cps it's so thin - like water by the way) I'd give them a call, as I'm not sure this would be achievable with the one or to coats recommended.

I suppose it depends to an extent on what colour you are trying to cover.

Nothing to do with Treadmaster but I noticed you have a konsort. When doing the deck, the original Westerly colour of deckpaint is achieved by mixing one tin of International interdeck Pale Blue with one tin of Grey.

Sorry, I'm a bit puzzled. Was your post intended for westevely? I'm not sure what our friend is actually trying to achieve, but assume he's wondering if he can use the standard International Deck Paint straight on top of the Treadmaster.

I have never tried this, but am pretty sure it won't work - at least long-term. The Treadmaster paint is designed, I believe, to be partly absorbed into the product, which is probably why it's made so thin in consistancy. However, as I said in my previous post, there is a range of colours in the Treadmaster paint range which might match, or get close to matching, the overall colour he's after.

I guess the simple answer is to call International and ask them. If thier deck paint is no good they'll say so, but they may well be able to recommend a primer for the Treadmaster that'll allow its use.

Sorry jerryat it was intended for westevely, I just clicked reply to the wrong message!

Westevely said..."I'm new to repainting my decks with antislip. Can I also paint over the old treadmaster" so in my understanding it is painted decks with treadmaster in the cockpit. Mixing the blue and grey would give the 'westerly blue' required for the deck, not the Treadmaster. In a post a few days ago on treadmaster painting, someone else pointed out that deckpaint in the cockpit will just wear out your trouser bottoms so is not a good idea.

I have never removed or painted treadmaster and my suggestion about the westerly blue was for deck painting - hence was nothing to do with treadmaster.

If the Treadmaster is really badly deteriorating and starting to break up then even Treadcote will not revive it for long. It is a horrible job to remove old Treadmaster so there is a strong incentive to save it if at all possible. I have found that Blakes epoxy primer/undercoat brushed into old crumbly Treadmaster penetrates and binds it back together without harming its non-slip properties. This is a semi-gloss epoxy paint available in various colours. It is more fluid and penetrative than most epoxies. It can be overcoated if required with conventional deck paint.

Thanks All,
What I actually had in mind was painting over the original blue anti slip (which I dislike ) with light grey and replacing the treadmaster in the cockpit with teak but it looks like I'll have to paint the TM grey too. Thanks again

Hi Westevely, there are some deals on Treadcote - the Treadmaster paint on their website right now I think? check out www.treeadmaster.co.uk - the paint it is excellent, and does salvage worn treadmaster - I once tried a different paint to savea bit of money and had to spend days taking it back off again as it flaked and made the surface more slippery - not good on a fisher! and not good for the money saving idea either! so used Treadcote and it looks like new - I changed the colour of it too - it was light grey but I used blue treadcote and it looks like I've replaced the whole deck /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
