I would recommend using a regular non-slip deck paint such as InterDeck from International or Deck Paint from Blakes. They need to go on over a suitable primer. I use International over an epoxy primer.

The other option is to add a gritting agent to a conventional paint. You can buy a special fine sand from chandlers, or use ordinary sand or even sugar. This is cheaper, but though effective I found the results tend to look patchy and unsightly.

Some people even suggest using masonry paint. I've seen this done and wouldn't recommend it - about as user-friendly as pebbledashing your deck.

A drawback of non-slip deck paint is that being slightly rough it gets grubby very easily and can only be scrubbed clean. It is not very hard wearing and will have to be overcoated every three years or so. However, it is a far more non-slip than either moulded GRP or teak, and a lot cheaper than Treadmaster.

Use Blakes myself,
Found it to be quite hard wearing.good for 2-3 years,
Masonary paint, adding sand etc.
Can be very painful if you slip,
Takes all the skin off.

If its GRP or Epoxy covered decks then the most effective non slip I'v found is paint decks with epoxy paint [709] or similar . Let dry mask areas to be non slipped paint area with epoxy paint then sprinkle washed ,dried and sieved sea sand liberally over wet paint. When paint is dry dust off excess sand and you will be left with an even coat of nonslip. paint further coat of paint on non slip area and the resulting surface looks really professional its long lasting [my own decks have been done and still looks good after 8 years!] and is scrubbable un like ordinary deck paint.
Give it a try chap you won't be dissapointed!
fair winds to you all

how to make your own...

a powder called 'Fillite' can be mixed into ordinary gloss paint to give a non-slip finish. buy it at enormous price from blakes as 'non-slip pearls' or very cheaply from grp suppliers such as Glasplies of Southport 01704 540626
mix 1-2 tablespoons of fillite to 3/4 litres of paint. After 13000 miles in the last 18 months ours is still effective.
Must use good quality paint, we did a few bits with B&Q gloss and they look dreadful whereas the parts done with Interlux are still smart.

Re: how to make your own...

thank you Mr leopard, you are a star. i was looking into paying huge bucks for special paint, even though i'm probably gonna go for teak deck overlay in the next year.

thanks for your advice, regards, steve.
