I would appreciate a steer on work planned on curing a deck leak on my Hillyard 8 ton. Structure is ply covered with what looks like a plasticised canvas. Might be paint-soaked. The damaged area is small and is the only area of penetration, so a full re-canvas is not called for.
My intention is to cut back the fabric and take out as much of the soggy wood as necessary to leave sound ply. Scarfe in new ply. Patch with canvas.
Questions: a; what is the best adhesive for the ply, given cramping from both sides is out because of position. b; what adhesive for the canvas? I had thought of epoxy on the contact side.
Thanks in anticipation.

For the plywood, epoxy would be the best and staple it to the old ply. Once the epoxy has set pull the staples out.
As for the canvas I don't know. It might be worth calling a tent manufacture and see what adhesives they use. Or try Hawke House Marine in Fareham. They are a marine canvas supplier. Sorry I don't Know their phone number.
Hope this helps.

If your Hillyard is built before about 1967 ithe method of construction was tongue & groove boarding which was canvas covered. That would have required canvas replacement after about 15 years and commonly at that stage the decks were often sheathed with thin plywood which was nailed to the boards and then epoxy & glass sheathed. If a section of this plywood has deteriorated then just cut the section away square edged, fit a new piece in on a good glue, polyurethane or even a waterproof low grade and nail or screw it in position. Resheath the area with epoxy resin & glass cloth.
Later Hillyards were built with !/2" plywood decks direct on the deck beams and also nailed & glued in position. The usual places for deterioration are close to the stanchion bases. One method of repairing is to cut a patch out and step the complete perimeter edge of ply half thickness anf fit a new pice of ply with a matching step ( use a step of about two inches), glue and screw with short screws, if necc. refinforce below if an area of loading. Epoxy sheath to finish. Should be an invisible repair. You can always Email me directly for further info ( I also have a Hillyard) John Lilley
