We looked at buying a 10/11 m Hunter in Florida a few years ago. We were quoted about US$7,500 (£5,000 approx) for the priviledge of getting it back to Southampton as deck cargo. Then there is mast unstepping/restepping and cranage both ends. etc. Then you probably also need need to have a cradle made for the trip.
I suspect £6K is the minimum by a large UK company. It might be cheaper dealing with a local shipper. (Get references first)
If the boat is well found and properly equipped it might be an option to get a professional skipper to sail her back. I guess someone would do it for about £2K - £2.5K. Best to find a recommended skipper direct, not through a greedy intermediary. Additional crew would probably cost you no more - people pay for sea miles! However, you'd be responsible for getting the skipper and crew to the boat and onward travel afterwards (But this could be negotiable). Timing and availability of cheap flights might prevail, as well as getting any extra gear to the boat
In the end we bought a boat in Holland and sailed her back to Portsmouth.
Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking about sailing her back if I buy. The fall-back of shipping is less and less attractive given your figures. (Which means I need to be absolutely sure I'm going to follow this all the way through...!!)
I was quoted a figure from the US in the same ball-park. But some friends recently did it from the Caribbean for half the price, by organising with Sunsail to be carried aboard a ship they had chartered to shift their yachts around. Of course they couldn't pick their dates, and there were delays. But it might just be worth getting in touch with them.
I wondered whether the charterers could offer something...
I can't get out to see the boat until November: between now and then I'll see what Sunsail can do.
