I'm in the final stages of fitting out before a 3 month trip. New (to me) boat goes back in the water next tuesday.

I am hunting for a nice oil lamp that is sturdy, does not leak and casts a decent but not harsh light. I want to be able to take it outside as well as in the wheelhouse when it gets cold.

I can not find anything suitable in the usual chandlery sites - any ideas ? Nothing appealed on the Hurricane web site and nothing in brass in stock for 8 weeks.

I've got an oil lamp ex-Nauticalia. Works fine, except it only has 'real' gimbals in one axis.

Proper oil lamps are probably as rare nowadays as hens teeth. Or as expensive as a Baby Blake.

We had one two boats ago. it gave a good light since it had a 1" wick but to maximise this we put a small brass framed mirror on the bulkhead behind it which also protected the timber.

We bought a small hurricane lamp from the chandlers at Salterns Marina, Poole last year. This was supplied by Nauticalia and has, so far proved non-leaking unlike the sucession of cheap chinese copies we've had previously. This one boasts a "Made in Britain" label.

Hanging up in the chandlers in Corfu, is a substantial oil lamp with two wicks intended as a saloon over table lamp.
