I was asked to find out how much the company I work for would charge to lift a seventeen ton yacht from a lorry into the Thames using their big blue cranes situated on the riverside quay at Tilbury.
we do a lot of lift outs, where boats of all shapes and sizes arrive from all over the UK by sea, are guided over strops attached to the big yellow spreader dangling from the boom , then unceremoniously plucked from the Thames and placed directly onto the deck of a ship for export. The whole process takes about half an hour and requires a crane driver and two groundsman. We've never had any going the other way, being delivered by land to Tilbury to be dumped into the Thames.
So into my guvnor's office I go, thinking, can't me much more than a hundred and fifty quid. After making a few phone calls he came up with a price and a date when there may be a couple of hours gap in the shipping.
£2500 !!
I was flabbergasted.
Apparently they have to have a cover boat with divers on standby in case the boat being lifted in sinks and stops a scheduled ship from berthing.
Is this the most expensive lift on the Thames ? I think so..
Anyone going to watch the air show at Southend on Sunday/Monday ? I'll be anchoring up in my usual spot by the end of the pier .
