Dealers to Avoid?

After reading the forum comments this weekend, I realise that I have not only got to do my homework before choosing the right boat for my family, but it is especially important to choose the right dealership to buy it from after reading the comments from one of the forum subscribers; 'For those who know Gibbs Marine, Are we surprised. Flog it and Run.'

I would be grateful for any advice and comments from readers of dealerships I should AVOID as good aftersales service is as important as choosing the right boat.

Re: Kim are you sure about this.

mmm shame though.. Would it be the forum or the individual potentially liable for libel? There must be places where more than one forum member has had a dreadful experience.

Re: Kim are you sure about this.

are we not allowed honest and open opinion, expressed by the end user. without recourse to the "legal" aspect of warantees and remoteness of injury arguments?

iv'e always had a problem with positive recomendation only. to express an opinion which discredits another is deemed unfair. sort of if you can't say something nice... say now't.

most of the points that seem negative, should serve to act as quality control, therefore bringing the standards of service higher, rather that resorting to legal actions that will only lead to more disclaimers. if bad press causes a dealer to "suffer financial loss" and look to redress that loss through legal channels. should they not thought of that when "offering bad service" or failing to respond to customer requirements?

good dealers are good, and get the benefits that they deserve. so why can't we give bad dealers the "benefits" that "they" deserve?.... after all it's our money they want.

freedom of speech... oh i hope so!

Once you know what sort of boat / manufacturers you are looking at - let us know and we can then guide you as to which dealers the panel recommend (rather than those to avoid) in your area.

Re: Kim are you sure about this.

Is it not just our 'British Reserve' and the trend never to complain, even if our steak is like old boots, that inhibits us from being direct about our criticisms.

What about the likes of 'Rogue Traders' and 'Builders from Hell' etc. They seem to get away with it.

I think the main problems with many dealers and marinas is getting any service at all, never mind bad service.

A quick chat on the phone to a dealer about some hypothetical issue, will probably give you a fair 'vibe' as to how helpful they are.

This is always going to be a difficult call.

what is rumour and what is fact and what is a misunderstanding.

I know that I hold orginal documents about a certain dealer.

The situation is clear and cannot be misunderstood .

How many of us can really claim to hold cast iron facts and thus cannot broadcast them for fear of legal stuff.

If you are considering a power boat up to 40ft then go and see Richard Bates at Bates Wharf Marine Sales in Chertsey www.bateswharf.com. I have purchased three boats from them and the backup has been excellent. If you are going larger then go and see Guy Norrish at Peters plc in Chichester where I purchased my new Fairline.

I would second that Richard Bates is probably one of the best dealers in the UK.

Honest, reliable, etc etc.
