Went with my son today to look at a sailing yacht for him as his first forey into boating. 22 foot of sailing fun. He did the deal and is now the proud owner of his first boat.

The problem now comes with the marina berth as we dident really appreciate the minimum charges at marinas and brighton was where he wanted to go but at £2200 its a high price. Any ideas if they negotiate or if there are deals anwhere to be had or has anyone got a spare berth fro the summer.
Just trying to help him get started and I did warn boating is an easy way of spending lots of money

Maybe find a swinging mooring somewhere. They are more of a pain, but a good way to start boating without breaking the bank. Try local yacht/sailing clubs, small boat yards and such. You will be suprised what you find.

ok thsnks for information. Jimmy what about the moorings with the appartments, do any one ever let them sperate??

I think the official position is that subletting is not allowed, although it does go on between friends. The problem with the private moorings is that generally the access is from the property to which the mooring is attached, so in practical terms this would be quite hard to organise with someone you don't know. The other issue is that the private moorings are all inside the lock, which is a major pita. Fyi those yellow and white tin huts on the east and west jetties don't have moorings with them.

Sorry this is a bit downbeat. I think the hard reality is that Brighton is cheap for the south coast, and so fills up in the summer. As a result they are not that bothered about small craft and have jacked the prices up pretty hard over the past few years.

Cheers
Jimmy

As an aside, is Brighton a good place to have a small yacht anyway?
From what I've read on here people seem to say that there is nowhere interesting to go for a day-sail and it is often quite rough outside the harbour.
Or am I confusing this with Eastbourne? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

No Bright on is possibly not the best place for a small yacht from that perspective. But for the purpose its on the mainline and easy to get to, has other facilities around and a good busy place to enjoy when not boating. I also agree theres no where to go, but he is thinking of some club racing etc etc which they do there in a good way
