One of my regular crew is fed uo with sailing with such an inept skipper he wants to do the DS course.

Never one to be insulted I thought I would I would encourage him by buying him the course pack for Xmas.

However as one who has difficulty finding France I had no chance navigating the RYA website.

When I did my course we were sold a pack containing a couple of fictitous practice charts, a pair of dividers, breton plotter and course notes.

All I can find now is a DVD of the course.

Can someone point me in the right direction please or is this pack with paper charts old fashioned or you can only get it from the course tutor?

Many thanks

Student packs, are only available to approved 'establishments/instructors'.
These do not include dividers/plotter, which are about £29 from the RYA.
The little handbook, gives all the stuff he needs, but the trick is, to read it.

ps Where are you/he based?

The pack is only provided to centres to pass onto students doing the course.

Traditionally night school used to sell the students the pack on night 1 as it made the course fees appear cheaper. Most of us these days simply include it in the course fee.

If he is looking for self study then maybe the online course would wok for him. We charge £295 (including the pack and certificate) and provide each student with a mentor, should he need any support.

Won't he get the course pack when he actually goes to do the course.

You could just give him an old chart of the area you sail, last year's almanac and a book by Tom Cunliffe or whoever.

a book by Tom Cunliffe or whoever.

If you do this, don't get Cunliffe's "Complete Day Skipper". It's an excellent book, but despite the name it's not really aimed at someone doing the Day Skipper course. More at someone who has bought or acquired a yacht and wants to teach themselves to sail independently.

Great found this bit of blue and on the east side there is a place called San Francisco. sounds a bit dago to me so must be spain need to look further north.

Will my computer and internet work when i am the middle of the blue bit? This Navigation biot is more difficult for us solent sailors than I thought!

It's correct that the course pack is only available to sailing schools, but the RYA navigational exercises book includes the charts used in the course pack (RYA 3 and RYA 4) plus a book of questions running through DS level and up to YM theory level which are essentially identical to those in the course pack revision book. This together with a Breton plotter and dividers pack by Portland and a copy of the DS theory RYA book will equate to everything in the course pack and more, with the exception of the (defunct and non examined) chart plotter CD and the certificate itself.

Total cost around sixty quid or so in any chandlery or I would guess you could get it all on amazon. Simples!

Sorry - did try that before posting - out of stock don't know next delivery - Not so simples.

Divider, Plotter, 2b pencil, soft eraser. & pencil sharpener it will be.

DS course is another present so I assume course notes will be given as part of course fee.

Oh that's a pity. He/she will get it all as part of the DS theory course included in the fee, yes.

Nothing available from eg bookharbour or one of the chandleries?

The RYA products are not the only possibilities, how abou this to go with the instruments?

http://www.bookharbour.com/navigation/day-skipper-exercises-for-sail-and-power/

Apperently includes a practice chart.

Cheers and good luck

There is a small Day Skipper book that goes with the course, which you can buy independently, but there was also a new one that came out in January, which is just RYA Day Skipper Sail - much better book IMO, but I now have so many books, including a fair few of Tom Cunliffes (all excellent & quite humorous) that I can't quite justify buying it yet :( Also, the Sailtrain website is pretty good!

Go figure !!

Mrs Scruffs and I did the RYA Day Skipper , (shore based) about 10 years ago at our local council run night school....as a kind of 'team building thing'...

It cost us £75.00 each

We both got a certificate.......basically for turning up.

The present cost is around £ 295.00........or......

£35.00 if you are on benefits....

Go figure !!
