I did 3/4 of my day skipper theory last winter, but due to work (damn that work) I couldn't finish the course.

I have been looking at an online course so I can finish ( http://www.cmonline.co.uk/) and was wondering if anyone else has done this course? or a similar one? Are they any good?

Steve

The CMOnline courses are pretty good - quite a few on here recommend them and I'm considering doing my YM theory with them (well - probably will do it with them, when I get time).

Have you considered going straight for the YM theory? Have a read of a dayskipper theory book and if it all makes sense it may be worth the extra effort of going straight for the YM. Wish I'd done that - the dayskipper course I did was a bit drawn out - though admittedly I did it at a night school over a number of weeks.

Hi I did my YM theory with them some time ago.
They were excellent, good quality course material, and excellent feedback on the assignments etc.
I would recommend them anyone interested in passing the theory exams.
Good luck with it

Stuart

Quite agree. If he's done 75% of a Dayskipper course and has handled that ok then I'd also suggest now going for the YM theory. There can be quite a lot of repetition otherwise.
In all honesty the theory courses are pretty elementary. I've never yet met anyone that has failed them.
I know of 2 people who failed the YM Practical recently - mainly because they hadn't done the theory courses beforehand.

mmm... you may be right. I just looked through the Yacht master theory syllabus online and quite a lot we covered (possibly in less detail) in the day skipper I have already done (it was a long course, about 4 months, 3 of which I completed every wednesday evening so they may have covered more than the basic level). It's the same price....

The online course looks quite good, Am i right in saying that it can be done at your leisure, say over a long period, or does it have to be done over a short period of say a few weeks?

I might go the Day Skipper route.

Cheers

Listen here Boyo! Agree with others go for Y/M . Even if you,ve 1/2 retained the 3/4 D/S Info in your bonce it,s a good " leg up".

Then flushed with your Cert, go practice the theory for real asap (notice from your profile you are with boat). Cos it will all make sense being fresh in your mind.

In fact a good idea is to take some literature down to the boat/ Local charts (not the RYA learning ones cos they don,t do Swansea isn,t it) rules of the road etc etc.
What I mean is it,s a bit more fun and makes more sense to get your head round the stuff in a boaty enviroment than inside 4 walls. If you,ve already done that ignore my ramblings and tell me to s*d off!

The Crusty Old Seadog who ran the course many moons ago when I did the thing in Deepest Angelsey. Made life a bit difficult ,he could hardly speak English, had a terrible lisp and a mild stutter!.

Wasn,t too bad for me but My Mate struggled, coming from St Helens He hadn,t met many Stuttering, Lisping, Celtic C.O.S,s.!!

It was the early days of "Applicants must have the ability to instruct in Welsh"
Crazy but true!

So do the YM in Saesneg, on line isnt it look you! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

although there appears to be a extension available /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

quote> You will be sent a reminder after 10 months. If you don not think you can finish the course in the remaining 2 months, contact your instructor immediately. We may be able to extend your course by a further 6 months at no extra cost.

If you do not contact your instructor you will be removed from the database at the end of the 12 month period. If you subsequently wish to be re-instated a charge of £60 will be made.

maybe it meant module 1 etc. As you can see from the quote cut and pasted from their site there speeling and grammer arent great. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi
I did 7/8ths of the DS Theory on a one to one basis and due to a) my retina detaching and b) the instructor disappearing to deliver boats for the summer period just as I recovered I am in the same situation as you.

I was wondering why you didn't consider going straight to DS practical. In my case the bits we didn't cover I could get from a book (e.g Col Regs) and I don't think its a pre-requisite to have the DS Theory Certificate. I understand it would be a bit daft to dive straight into the practical with no training at all but with 3/4 of the theory under your belt maybe its enough?

Having a look at one of their demo's just now, bear in mind that even if you have scripting enabled you will still have to click the top bar in IE6 and then start agin to allow the course to run.

I'm working away from home for a few months and the theory would give me something more useful to do other than looking at piccies of superyachts in yacthworld.com wondering if my lottery numbers are going to come up! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have done some basic tuition with a local instructor but would like to get a bit more experience with short trips before taking the DS practical.

Thats what I was trying to suggest earlier, sort of nipping around The Bay with "homework" and a handy bod with you.

Weird just been gawping at "Unnafordables " and dreaming about the problem of dealing with the 6 no jackpot ,do we all do it? /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I did the cmonline YM course earlier this year.

I thoroughly recommend it.
As others have said on this thread, dont bother with the DS go straight for the YM.
I think they offer a "brush up" course to get you prepared for the YM.
Again go straight for the YM.
The first module of the YM recaps on the DS anyway.

You also say you want to do something whilst you are away from home.
OK but you will need to be fixed to your computer and will need plenty of space to lay the charts out - there's lots of chartwork. You will need to do sessions of 2 to 3 hours without any distractions

The course is split into modules.
Each module you read through the theory and then do an assesment.
I found that I could read through a module quite quickly thinking that I had got and understood it all.
It is only when you come to do the assesments that you realise that you havent picked it all up 100%.
So I used the assesments as a means of learning.
It was about half way through that I realised that is exactly what they expect - initially I thought I was cheating!!.

Anyway, by the end of the course it all goes in.

One of the best courses I've ever done - go for it - push yourself with the YM though - dont bother with the DS.
