What an amazing feeling when finally..........it all seems to fall into place!

We have just completed the RYA course with skipper supremo.............George Morgan Harris.... (Premiere Sea) based in Portsmouth.

A top guy, and a patient if a little patronising (LOL) bloke also. Daily laughs were common place, I would thoroughly reccomend any one new to boating to spend a little cash and get some proffesional instruction.

We split our course into 2 parts, sadly because of mechanical failure, and the weather could have been a hell of a lot kinder, but it was great all the same.

Pipedream sitting pretty at Yarmouth harbour, shorlty before the heavens opened, having just taken all the ugly covers off!

My first veiw of the needles, there is a bit more 'Chop' around the other side of the island ey??? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

A feeling of relief when leaving Port Solent yesterday, having done 2 hours at least of ...........in and out berthings!
It took a while but blimey, Ive got it sussed now.

Wifey having just been issued with the order to bring the fenders in.

Mechanicaly the final 2 days of the course were ok till leaving Portsmouth yesterday, when for no apparent reason the Starboard Leg decided to come up to the beach setting all by itself............a tap on the relay sorted that out.

She's doing about 3/4 gallon to the mile, and i recon costing us about £100 per mile in repair bills thus far, I hope we have her sorted now, cos she's a hell of a lot of fun!

COME ON SUMMER!!! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

If you want to do it on your own boat we can arrange it! We have a man who works for us in your area.

Iain, just a thought.
Why not do the DS out of Your area?
Why?
You may well ask.
I just did an RYA course in the Solent.
I live on Anglesey, could have done said course locally but two train of thoughts.(trains of thought?).
1 To do it in pastures new was interesting and more challenging.
2 Took SWMBO away so She had a break and a look at Pastures new.
Just a thought (or two!).
Expence ! I hear You say.
Ah well, I had to go down South anyway to get bits for the Boat.
Saved about a Grand by getting My bits in the UK.
Not always Rip Off Britain!

Now that's a good idea too.
Suprised the dearth of Schools in the Bristol area.
Maybe safer in Bristol, theres some dodgy gits operate in the Solent!
Speak with funny accents too! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Thanks to both !
I like the idea of own boat tuition.
Would it be posible to have a pre course meet with your instructor so he can asses(?) our requirements? We may need more theory 1st?
I did DS practical about 15 years ago but never actually sat the exam (weekend stag in Amsterdam got in the way).

Cheers

We have Compas Sea School in Portishead, did our VHF with them and v good, but they don't yet offer DS pratical. Bristol Sailing School, I think, offer DS theory but I would prefer, if spending all that money, to be afloat!
Our boat, a Sealine 215 is for sale and we would want to do the course when we have our new boat. Looking for a 26-28' sports cruiser, plenty around but no-one seems to want "Misty Spirit!" www.bristolyachtbrokerage.com

Who has the funny accents? The South Coasters or the Bristolians?

Congratulations on DS completion.

You seem to be logging up some miles too. Did you go round the island or back up the Needles channel?

Great pictures too. The one in the lock looks like a fuel ad for Premier though. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I didnt think that DS practical had an exam - just course completion to the satisfaction of the instructor?

I only say this cause I had 2 DS trainees on my boat for a couple of days during my YM practical, and there was no suggestion of an exam for them.

Power could be different of course.

Cheers Rog, I recon we have now done close on 250 in the last few trips around and about. Went all the way around the Island, the sea is a bit more challenging around that side however!

Sandown Bay is lovely, I recon we are getting about 3/4 gallon per mile consumption at about 3300-3500 rpm.

It would be nice to tag along with you guys some time, and have a play with some 'Big Boats'. Are you down and 'Out' this weekend??
Maybe next week end, my Mrs will be there too, she wonders where all the wives or ladies are at Sparkes...........Adult company would be nice she says...........That counts me out !! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Jas.

N.B. no exam for DS course, just complete all the challenges to the satisfaction of George!
