Sounds wonderful. Having been into London by boat made me look at the city in a new light, so can imagine what it must be like going into Paris that way

As a matter of interest, what set up are you using to access forum while on the move. Presume phone/laptop, but interested in which provider you are using, whether 3g/gprs etc, and what costs? as this question asked a lot on forums

Re: 3 g connection

Is that UK Vodafone, and does that tariff apply when roaming abroad. One of the limitations the liveaboard forum often comments on is how roaming rates abroad are less than transparent, and often hideously expensive?

Sorry, hijacking thread a bit, but it's one of the most commonly asked questions on the forums at the moment, so nice to ask someone else who's using it in anger abroad.

Re: 3 g connection

I use a Vodafone 3G card abroad regularly and before that I had a Connect GPRS card. The problem is when you use another network other than Vodafone to connect as then Vodafone claim they cant control the cost of that connection. You do have the ability to select a network and I always try to connect using Vodafone's local network and then the standard tariff seems to apply

Re: 3 g connection

Interesting, as many posts in liveaboard about roaming rates. Would be nice to get to bottom of it, and understand what internet access via 3G abroad really does cost. I'm 2 or 3 years out of touch as haven't used roaming for internet much for a while, and tariffs have changed significantly in that time

Re: 3 g connection

I think it is very much pot-luck with the UK provider & who you connect to when roaming.

I use T-Mobile GPRS & certainly when I connect to T-Mobile in the USA or western Europe, any GPRS data usage comes out of my 'inclusive' date allowance.

The only country I have been hit with extra charges is Russia, where the charge was about twice the UK charge.

I was told unofficially that their billing systems are not set-up to cope with data roaming & so few people actually use it, they haven't bothered to try to fix it.

In practice I don't have to use GPRS a great deal, I can normally find an open Wi-Fi connection somewhere.

They probably wave at you...

...for breaking the speed limit. Don't have Navicarte 1 to hand but unless something has changed I think you'll find you are making a speed (and wash) that will cause quite a bit of distress.

Time to chill out a little and enjoy the scenery?

Re: 3 g connection

Having looked at Vodaphones website and compared with the tarifff I get from Orange, I am astonished by the figures Sami is quoting. In fact, I would suggest he checks this out or he might find a nasty shock when he gets his next bill !

People are so friendly I think because there not so class concious you dont get the feeling there looking down on you
unlike some parts of jolly old blighty (not Bristol)

Dont know if you have been up the Seine before but there is a good overnight mooring just before Melun, we couldnt get in the marina but moored just outside, its on the port side.If you want fuel the next after Paris is St.Mammes.big commercial fuelling point, pleasure craft fuelling at topside of commercial. There is a piece of landing cut out,you will be safe there although if a barge comes you will have to wait until he goes!! There is a lovely mooring opposite the fuel.We went down the C. de Long.If you want any further info.let me know.

Friendly hint

We have been up and down the Seine between Paris and the sea many times and you will get hassle about wash, even though the local authority boats seem to make plenty on occasions. You're obviously well up now but worth being careful.

Once locked in at Amfreville I prefer a one-engine meander but perhaps you are on a bit more of a schedule.

Be especially watchful on the approaches to Paris...there are many liveaboard barges with windows cut into sides low down where there is little freeboard...just a few inches.

Hi, Sami... I went to have a look at the Arsenal last weekend... its a great location isn't it.... I particularly liked the fact that you can get off the Metro at the Bastille stop, and a large glass window gives you an unobstructed view over the entire Arsenal.... excellent... mind you... I wasn't aware that it was £22 a night.... thats a lot!
