Dawn ll, built in 1907 designed by G. Umfreville Laws needs to be saved.
built by W E Thomas of Falmouth.
Quote from the auction.
Dawn is currently lying ashore at Calshot in Hampshire. Unfortunately the centre has decided to stop storing keel boats in their yard with affect from 31/01/14. All storage is paid up until then, but the boat will have to be re-located. To give time to re-locate I'm sure an extra week could be negotiated. Throughout the 5 years I've owned Dawn she has been undercover in a purpose made tent. This has now been taken down in preparation for her re-location but she is wrapped in sheeting to keep her dry.

I have no connection with this sale on ebay other than I am the owner of another G.U.Laws designed boat
and being an interested party would like to see her saved and not go to the scrap heap.

I misread your post as "built in 1970" and wondered why you were so keen to save her.

However having squared up my glasses I see now that she is worth some time, effort and a barrow-load of money.

Please reconcile these two statements.

You will see if if you reread my post the:-
( Throughout the 5 years I've owned Dawn she has been undercover in a purpose made tent.)
is a Quote from the sellers write up on ebay and not from me.

The disclaimer ( I have no connection with this other than I am the owner of another G.U.Laws designed boat.)
is from me.
I hope this sorts it for you.:)

That's going to be a labour of love - and not a small amount of money.

I do hope someone takes the project on

Sorry - missed that! Understood.

Oh that's heartbreaking! And not the usually heap of bonfire fodder either! If only I had the time and money!

Not sure this bit of the listing is entirely accurate though:

Condition:
Used: An item that has been previously used. The item may have some signs of cosmetic wear, but is fully operational and functions as intended.

Interesting that it is almost exactly the same length beam and draught as Avocet but weighs twice as much!

That is part of the problem.

Clearly she has no engine (at least at the moment) and 5 tonnes is a lot of boat to handle without one (about the same as Bedouin).

Pretty though she is even when done up she would not be my ideal boat - just a bit too impractical.

I think that is a standard bit print on all ebay auction pages unless you enter or tick the appropriate box for a new item.

Not sure about the covering of the hull with fibre glass though .Not so bad if it's epoxy but if it's polyester resin then it isn't good news at all .

She has nice lines - maybe this is a bit philistine but isn't this like the brush that lasted 20 years with 5 new heads and 3 new handles? All the deck, a lot of the planks and spars will have been replaced. What exactly are we 'saving'?

Dylan might be able to pick it up cheaper than a centaur and put a well in it:D

Pitty about the time constraint finding a buyer with the funds to relocate a finish might not be easy even for 99p

Very common when epoxies became available that a whole new wooden boat restoration industry started ..The old leaky boat adage was updated, ''In glue and dust we place our trust, if that wont do, epoxy must'

Quite common to strip off ropey old laid decks, replace soft beams and carlines and decayed tierods and knees, and relay a new stiffening deck in ply/epoxy, and sheath a hull after judicious plank work and refastening. Add some new, internal metalwork too oft to take the rig loads..Assessing the quality though, aye, there's the rub!

It seems most of her fittings are with her then 4 to 6K overall costs should get you somewhere near doing it DIY.
Or put her in the hands of a pro 10k+.
The biggie is the yard rental most of the boats undergoing restoration on yards are left abandoned for far too long and this is what happens to them they become unwanted and sell for next to nothing.

£10k will just about get the teak decks replaced by professionals on a 26 footer, if you're lucky. Poor old Dawn II needs a tad more work than that, I fear.

That's the point. It's 2 or 3 years of serious work. If you enjoy that you'll probably never put her on the water, but sell her when finished. At a loss.
