I have a Bavaria 38 AC sailboat and plan to get davits for the dinghy this year. Ideally, the davits should be strong enough to bear the load of my 3.10 metre RIB with 15 hp outboard engine. Combined, they weigh around 100 kg. So, I am looking for someone with experience who could give me some advice concerning choice of davits.

Best regards,
Eystein (Norway)

This type may not take the stresses involved.

But more important,(I think) is the part of the boat it is attached to. The davit in the picture is still in use with a 2.7 rib and 5hp o/b. the underside of the deck has been reinforced, and the flange repaired. There is also a wire aerial from the end of the davit that has the engine, to the top of the mast, just to take a little of the weight.
I wouldn't go for anything that didn't have at least two well-spaced fixing points on each davit - preferably on the deck and transom.
Get the biggest strongest you can find/have made, you never know who's going to 'brush by' them in his fishing boat!!

To hold that sort of weight I'd go with

Simpson Davits by Cooney Marine

Not cheap though :(

I have fitted davits to three boats now. The best are Simpson davits now Cooney Marine. Send me your email and I will send some pictures. If you have any kind of curved surface to fit them on, the brackets need to be made professionally. My present boat they are fitted onto angled and curved surface (Transome), 100 kg each davit but I have had 150 kg davits as well.

I bought a pair of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MARINE-MOTOR-BOAT-DINGHY-DAVITS-160KG-LARGE-YACHT_W0QQitemZ130332683196QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_BoatEquipment_Accessories_SM?hash=item1e586eebbc#ht_1046wt_736. I bought the 100KG load ones but you'd need the stronger ones. Easy to install and work a treat. Removed or turned sideways in a couple of seconds. Beware shock loads with any davits though, I ran lines from the bow and stern of the dinghy to stern cleats to stop it swinging.
