What is the feeling about keeping a tender on davits during longer passage making versus folding and stowing the tender?

Tender Davits

We keep ours plus engine on the davits in the Med. but have a set of chocks on the fore deck should we ever cross an ocean.

Handy to have it there in case you needed to abandon (in addition to the liferaft). The down side is that if you are pooped, a couple of tons of green water getting dumped in the dinghy could cause a serious problem.

I am in the process of rigging an arrangement where the dinghy can be hoisted horizontally to deck level for normal cruising but tilted up around 70° for an offshore passage. That wouldn't work for a mono unless the transom was very wide and the dinghy short as you wouldn't want it sticking out beyond the topsides in a blow from ahead.
