Hi,

Having finally to decided to buy proper snap davits rather than making some heath robinson affair, I am about to stick the pads to dinghy.

The adhesive label suggests priming both surfaces with 'Polymarine Solvant 2903' or Acetone before applying the adhesive itself. Of course, I don't have any and am hoping one of you will advise whether anything such as white spirit, petrol etc would have the same effect as acetone.

Apologies if this a really daft question but it was either here or try a PVC forum which might have proven tough to explain to Mrs Harley!

I have pads at the ready....

Perfect - thanks.

Just found large quantity in SWMBO's giant cleansing/moisturising/general pre going to bed bag!

Acetone is indeed the key ingredient of nail varnish remover

Was also advised that 'had I asked her she could have told me that!!'

Thanks a lot
Adam

Most proprietry nail varnish removers contain other compounds to aid their effectivness, surfactants, perfumes etc. You need pure acetone, Di-methyl ketone, which you should be able to buy from most pharmacies.
The adhesives used are very sophisticated these days, and I think you could end up "spoiling the ship for a ha'path of tar" not a bad metaphore in this case.
I put some pads on my tender nearly 5 years ago using a two pack adhesive supplied by the davit manufacturer, they still perform and look like new today.

I wouldn't use nail varnish remover, but you can buy a small bottle of acetone from a chemist. A pity you are not near me as I have ten litres of the stuff.

Don't use petrol or white spirit as they can leave an oil like residue, which can spoil the adhesion, as could the additives in nail varnish remover.

Isopropyl Alcohol should be alright, but as that is also available from the chemist you may as well go for the acetone.

You will probably be asked what you need it for. Don't tell them you intend to drink it, even though it is ten times more expensive than real booze. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
