I have received a letter from a company of insurance consultants, with my full name and address, and the full name of my boat. I was intrigued as to where they had got this information, and contacted them to find out.

They now tell me that they have bought database extracts from the “MCA/SSR”. Now, as it happens, my boat is not on the SSR, as she is registered under Part 1, but presumably the information still originated from the MCA.

By what right is the MCA selling details about me and my boat?. Surely this is the sort of thing that the Data Protection legislation is supposed to protect me from. What other information about me have they been selling to third parties?

I have emailed the MCA, and am waiting for a response.

Good luck !

I expect they will tell you that they cannot supply you with the information you require because it is protected under the terms of the Data Protection Act.

Had a letter too from a company called Traffords ..... I also got a quote and it was dead impressive. When mine is due I'm going to go with them.

I'd be more concerned about the man outside your house with the camera and the other guy raking in your bin for your bank statements than a letter that can always go in the recycling. Everyone knows where we live and what we do .... I always smile at the CCTV (don't let them know it's getting you down) !
