i'm after a simple "dash" camera to put up the mast (can wire it 12v no problem) for general playback of interesting events onboard, docking, broaching :) etc....

motorbike dashcam maybe....had anyone used anything, before I start trying to work out the pitfalls and problem areas.... getting a switch 12v feed there is easy enough...whos done it?

I think the biggest problem you will have is getting the image from the camera to a suitable display, every 'Dashcam', including motorcycle based units are an 'All in one unit' that you remove the SD card to download the images. Unless low down, having to shimmy up the mast each time would be unworkable. If low down, you could do a lot worse than a Gopro, fantastic units, huge amount of accessories, robust and can be picked cheaply on fleabay, super weatherproof too.

nah, pretty much all of them are Wifi.....
Gopro is fine, but cant start/stop automatically and cant hardwire (in the case)....so pretty pants from that perspective.
needs to be totally automatic....like er a dashcam :)

I have a Garmin Virb which can start recording as soon as it has power. There is also a small remote control for it and you can access the files via wifi.

I have GoPro with remote .... expensive CRAP (can power external or via own battery)

I have a couple of Trailcams that have auto start - stop and can be linked via WiFi or cable ... internal or external power

I have so many different DVR's for model use or just plain recording ... the market is flooded with possibilities ...

Heres a small sample of what I have used and have in the drawer :

A small sample ... I have loads of others - but most are mounted on models or area ...

I did use WiFi for a while - but then reverted to SD card ....

If anyone wants miniature and with remote control ... its possible with Drone Cameras which transmit via RF all video ... the On Off can be via the power - usually 3,3 or 5v .... a tablet with suitable RF recvr will then display the output ... tablet can record via an app the screen.

Just for the hell of it I got my Android phone's camera video output to display on a Raymarine Axiom plotter via WiFi. No particular use, but a bit of fun. I'm working on a waterproof wired security camera to Axiom next.

Mine is fixed onto a dedicated mount on my rib and is only removed because of theft risk. The cable clips to the side with gold plated contacts and is all waterproof.

Not done the security camera yet.

For the mobile phone camera install DroidCam from Play Store on your Android phone. You need to run a web browser on the Axiom. There's a hidden one in the Spotify app. Create a Spotify account on a computer (it looks like you can do that on the Axiom but it doesn't work). On the Axiom connect it to the internet via WiFi. Start the Spotify app on the Axiom. Log in. Once you are logged in you can disconnect the internet. It remembers it and you don't need to connect to the internet or log in again. In Spotify bring up the help. This is actually a web browser. Start DroidCam on your phone. This will give you a URL. Type this in to the address bar on the web browser in the Axiom's Spotify app and it shows the phone's camera output.

Ah, ingenious, the Spotify app.
Had to be useful for something!
Thank you.

All attempts with security camera seem to be successful only with older firmware which doesnt require a login for the camera. Although after your last success, good luck!

Have a look at these, I have an earlier version on my bike which has proved reliable. It's hardwired, starts recording automatically on power-on, has motion activated recording, saves on a loop and has a "save" button for that broach you really want to share with us all. My old one has a screen, the new ones without look more weather resistant.

The Go Pro is ok in high light conditions, has decent automatic settings and has WiFi. Similar from DJI, Xiaomi, Garmin and SJCam.

All have their own HDR formats rather than one of the standard ones, so can't be used live - designed for colour grading.

The other option would be to look for a small broadcast cam of the type you'd embed in a goal post or stump. Cheap, waterproof, smaller, designed for 12v ...

Don't get caught up on 4k, for the same size sensor you'll have 4x the area per pixel at HD, so more light per pixel, better low light performance and less noise.
