We are intending to take a long weekend on the Dart this coming weekend, possibly a mooring buoy at either Dittisham or Dartmouth (or both), and SWMBO has stipulated that she must have a shower available.

Does anyone know who/where/when showers are available for visitors in Dittisham/Dartmouth. We have a tender with outboard, so getting ashore will not be an issue.

We could probably get in at Darthaven if no other showers available, but the £25 per night puts me off slightly......

There are showers available in the public conveniences on the embankment on the Dartmouth side of the river. Don't know how clean or whether there is a charge.

Don't know of anything further up the river.

Darthaven showers are cleaned regularly, but as you say, a bit expensive.

BTW if you want a mooring buoy you will have to go up to Dittisham. Visitors berths in Dartmouth are mainly mid-rive pontoons.

There are loos and showers at Dartmouth, in the NE corner of the nearby park. They are basic but usable. The cabins are large tiled spaces and although it's two or three years since I was there, I'm sure there was no charge. Not luxury, but adequate if you are on the town quay or nearby. The offshore pontoon is handy if you don't mind dinghying.

you can also go to the Dartmouth Yacht Club, down towards the Dartmouth Arms pub and lower ferry on the Dartmouth side which has very good showers upstairs ( £1 in the slot) and full pub facilities on the ground floor and always very friendly welcome

Dont forget to factor in harbour dues. They are very hot on it at the moment! We popped upto Dittisham a couple of weeks ago, only there for an hour and had to pay £9.47 dues for 11m boat. They even have mobile card machines in case you dont have cash!!

Thankyou for all your help so far. The mid-river pontoons are OK, but have always been covered in Seagull cr4p when we've moored up there before, maybe we were just unlucky.

Good point about the Yacht Club, I'll give them a call and make the introduction first. Maybe I can get away with one night in Dartmouth, then a smellier night up at Dittisham on a Buoy.......

Maybe I'm just old, but simply don't get this (seemingly recent) obsession with showering 3 times a day. Since when does someone become 'unclean' after a day? Or perhaps thats just a cynical view that doesnt help the sales of moisturisers and cosmetics...

If you've been wading in pig muck all day then I'd say a shower was probably a nessecity, but lounging on a yacht?

The mid river water barge was absolutely covered two years ago when we came alongside. I will inspect before stopping in July when we are down.

The good news is the Dartmouth Yacht Club, very friendly so more than happy to spend our money in their bar.

I quite enjoy a shower at the end of a hard sail, but then we don't have electric winches.

We arrived on Alderney a few weeks ago, they have lovely new showers, and I forgot the soap! Rushing back and fro to the wash hand basins to get soap was fun and the people in the pub did not complain about the smell.

I used to think showers were one of those effete things that foreigners liked but after developing a medical problem wherein hygiene is necessary I find a shower each morning very reassuring, though I don't imagine it makes a ha'porth of difference, skin being naturally antibacterial.

What about Noss Marina, further up the river and MUCH friendlier than Darthaven. Individual showers and some baths, not as up to date as Darthaven but clean and private. Staff happy to help you in and out of the berths although you will probably raft up. It's a great place and has just been bought by Premier so visit before it changes too much!
In bad weather the berths are far calmer than those further down the river- very little swell. I highly recommend the place.

The mid-river pontoons are new and lovely. Grid-type non slip.

OP - Dittisham is not smelly at all, especially as there are public showers above the playing field...

The N embankment showers are fine, but DYC is a good option.

There is water available on the recycling pontoon upstream of the fuel barge, but watch you don't get pinned on it by the ebb.

Thanks for that KAL, good to know about the showers at Dittisham, and the new mid-river pontoons.

It's looking like the weekend will be a non-starter anyway, forecasting 18-20mph winds on Saturday/Sunday so even if we get there tomorrow we may not be able to get back home!

I stayed in Dartmouth on Monday night this week. I think it's an absolutely disgraceful rip off. A few p under £36 for a 10.5m boat on the Town Quay. No loos except public some way away or Dartmouth Yacht Club about 200 yds, no showers except the public ones some way away (now 20p not free) or DYC £1, no rubbish disposal except the pontoon next to the fuel barge, high charge for wi-fi. No security, full public access to where you are. There is water and electricity.

DYC highly recommended for showers and bar. Harbour Authority are taking unfair advantage of them.

No food at DYC that evening but we had a very good reasonably priced meal in the restaurant above DYC (no connection with them).

Completely agree, but then people still seem to rush to use the Town Quay, which is the most expensive mooring in the harbour, whilst also being the least peaceful and a git to get into, esp in an ebb. Always rafting as well.

Far better to anchor or to use one of the excellent new VPs and dinghy in or use the yacht taxi.

If you do make it round, there is a pontoon directly outside Dartmouth YC that should take your size boat. Big advantage is that its walk ashore and probably the same price as a mid river pontoon. Worth a quick phone call to Dart Nav to check.

Thankyou LJS, I will remember that for next week when we have another attempt. We've decided for this weekend to pop around to the Cary Arms today, maybe stay overnight there, then back to Torquay and spend the weekend on our home berth.

Good choice with current wind direction. It'd recommend Ansteys Cove for a peaceful overnight stay.
