Just received the agreement for our winter berth on the Dart. Includes the requirement that the vessel is visually inspected every day, and boarded and closely inspected at least twice a week, more in bad weather (the latter seems the most reasonable requirement). If not by the owner, by an agent. The key holder/agents I spoke to before appointing one for our summer berth all seemed to assume a passive role, responding to emergencies rather than actively checking the boat, though I imagine anything is possible at a price. The mooring is at Dittisham, which will not make things any easier. Anyone got any experience of how they or people they know deal with this?

Those requirements sound like they don't want you there.
Unless you live nearby how are you meant to view your boat every day ?
With enough moorings someone could have full time employment checking all the boats every day.
Does anyone actually comply ?

That’s what I’m hoping to find out. I had been planning to be on board when proper bad weather comes through, and to get down weekly otherwise. Daily simply isn’t possible, and I doubt paying someone else would be affordable. Just hoping to find out what others do so I can reconsider my options. Biggest worry I guess is if I am not able to comply and the worst did happen my insurer would refuse to pay out - I’ll have to ask them but want my ducks in a row first.

You would be doing everyone a favour by telling Dart Harbour the conditions are too onerous and you are going elsewhere. Maybe then they will see sense next year.

Do they offer an inspection service at a premium rate? Are the constraints part of the incentive?

Yes. appoint the agent and sign the form. it provides a contact in emergencies. By the way those agents or the one I know of states the check the vessle weekly. its their responsibility to carry this out. sometimes contracts are just worth signing and not reading, they only wind us up.

Thanks all - the harbour authority has now reformulated the inspection condition, replacing the previous instruction with strong advice that “you check your vessel regularly - especially before and after bad weather. If you are unable to carry out these inspections you must arrange for your agent to carry them out for you.” Which seems eminently sensible.

Darn, that has ruined my 'get rich quick' plan for the winter. ;)
