Dangers of too much \'oil\' in gearbox -

I've put too much fluid in my basic Hurth gearbox. Friends tell me it will cause problems - will it and why? No problem to suck it out but I'd like to know why it will cause damage.

When it warms up there will be insuffient air space within the box, internal pressure increases and there is a risk of blowing out oil seals etc. Messy, potentially expensive, and the risk of the thing packing up at sea.

the power of hydraulics will lift a thousand tons. it will break your gearbox no problem. i did it once, fist thing i noticed was unburnt fuel out the exhaust, the engine laboured and i thought there was a rope around the prop. it was a stupid thing to do as i had not looked for the level screw and assumed i had to fill the box! 'phoned my dad, he called me a prat and i let about a pint out. i read the manual from now on.

Hurth gearboxes are notorious for this. A few drops over the dipstick level, and at some point the gear will fail to engage properly and will slip.

I made the same mistake once. Consternation in a Dutch marina we were entering - had to back out under sail, no joke with a heavy steel long-keeler capable of causing a lot of damage in a breeze. The Dutch mechanic knew immediately. Two cans of beer for an evening call-out ... we got off lightly.

Re: On the level

With the Hurth box how do you read the level: should you screw the dipstick back in (and then out again to read it), or just put the plug in contact?

Re: On the level

You do not screw it back in, just poke it in the hole so it rests on the threaded section, lift it out and read the level.

Re: On the level

I've come across numerous gearboxes like this with a threaded dipstick and they NEVER tell the use whether to dip it screwed in or not.

The Hurth \'user\'s manual\'...

which is a sheet of A4, does say that the dip stick should not be screwed in when checking the level (that's for the HBW100 wot I used to have).
